The High Court on Sunday upheld the death penalty to two convicts and commuted death sentence of four to life-term imprisonment in the sensational Bishwajit murder case.
The court also acquitted two death-row convicts.
An HC bench of justice Ruhul Quddus and justice Bhishmadev Chakrabortty passed the order following an appeal filed by eight convicts.
Of the convicts, the death penalty of Rafiqul Islam Shakil and Rajon Talukdar were upheld.
The court reduced punishment to life-term for Mahfuzur Rahman Nahid, Emdadul Haq Emdad, GM Rasheduzzaman Shaon and Mir Nur-e-Alam Limon.
The acquitted are two death row convicts -- Qaiyum and Saiful Islam -- and two others who were sentenced to suffer life-term -- Golam Mostafa and HM Kibria.
The court however did not say anything against the 11 fugitive convicts who got life-term imprisonment in the case.
On 9 December in 2012, tailor Bishwajit Das was chopped to death by a few activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), an associate body of ruling Awami League, near Bahadur Shah Park in older part of Dhaka.
UNB adds: On 17 July last, an HC bench fixed 6 August for delivering the verdict after concluding hearing on the case.
Earlier, on 16 May this year, the High Court started hearing the death reference and appeals in the murder case.
On 18 December in 2013, a tribunal condemned eight BCL activists to death and 13 others to life term imprisonment in the Bishwajit Das killing case.
Judge ABM Nizamul Haque of the Speedy Trial Tribunal-4 pronounced the verdict against all 21 accused in the case. All the convicts were activists of Jagannath University unit BCL.
The tribunal also fined the 13 lifers Tk 20,000 each, in default, one year’s rigorous imprisonment.
Besides, as per the Bangladesh Penal Code-143, the tribunal awarded the lifers six months imprisonment and fined Tk 500 each, in default, to serve 15 days more in jail.
Metropolitan magistrate Zahurul Haque framed charges against the 21 activists of Jagannath University unit BCL on 2 June in 2013.
On 5 March, Tajul Islam, DB inspector and investigation officer of the case, submitted the charge sheet against the 21 accused.
