Media exaggerates flood’s extent: Anisul

Anisul
Water resources minister Anisul Islam Mahmud on Tuesday accused the local media of exaggerating the extent of the floods, saying that the country’s northern region has not been affected by the floods as much as the media is portraying.
Also a leader of Ershad-led Jatiya Party, Anisul made the accusation at a public rally organised by ruling Bangladesh Awami League (AL) in Bhola sadar upazila (sub-district).
The water resources minister inspected river erosion in the area.
Addressing the rally, Anisul said, “Please come with me to the North Bengal, I will show you that there was no flood water inside the dam. But the video footages and photographs being aired and published on television and in the newspapers are the pictures of different char [islands] areas.”
He went on to say, “And we’ve kept those areas as reservoirs to conserve flood water, because the water must be diverted in a certain direction when rivers swell and if you block the waters, the water will erode the river banks.”
He said there should not be any habitats in the area. “But as our population is high, people build their habitats in such areas. And the media is publishing those pictures more.”
The minister claimed that the current government has achieved the ability for river training.
