Child tied to tree on theft charge in Netrakona

Photo: CollectedA five-year-old boy was tied to a tree for nearly two hours on charge of stealing cigarettes from a shop at Jahangirpur in Madan upazila in Netrakona on Sunday, reports UNB.

The victim was identified as Majharul Miah, son of Azarul Islam of Madan village in the upazila.

Quoting locals, Madan upazila press club general secretary Poritosh Das said when Majharul touched a cigarette packet at the shop of Shanta Munshi at noon, the shopkeeper caught the boy and tied him to a tree by the shop.

Majharul was released one and half an hours after his capture when other people intervened.

“As I touched a packet of cigarette, the shopkeeper tied me to a tree. I didn’t steal cigarettes,” said the victim.

Admitting the incident, Shanta said he tied the boy for stealing the cigarette.

Contacted, inspector of Madan police station Majedur Rahman said a police team visited the spot but found no proof of such incident.
